  1. I thought i did this before and it worked and now when i try to copy and paste it it says i dont have permission….any ideas?

    • Anthony, open the hosts folder location, CUT the file and PASTE the desktop. Open with Notepad and edit your hosts file. Then when your done editing copy the file back to your original hosts location. If it is Win7 it will be, “C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc”

      • I always used to have this problem, then I realized:
right click on notepad and “run as administrator”, then open and browse to the hosts file and add the extra lines as described above and then save.

  2. much appreciated, do you know how to stop adobe acrobat X Pro from connecting to the internet for registration

  3. do u know how to do this in a mac? im no longer on windows and i need a similar solution for stopping internet updates on my mac machine.

    appreciate the help!!!

    • I think that on a mac this should be the same or a similar procedure like on linux: the file is just at /etc/hosts, maybe OS X puts this in a special system folder… the thing is: you only need to figure out where the hosts file is located, I think the effect is the same on every OS.

    • Hello =)
      Its the same for mac.
      Just do
sudo nano/private/etc/hosts then edit that with the blocks =)

      • A little extra note on macs is that doing this in terminal may require a password to be entered. In the case of at least one of my macs, I was not able to log into hosts file without having first installed a password on my mac. the command i use is “sudo nano /etc/hosts”

  4. Hi, i have downloaded the trial for cs5 photoshop…put the right blocking activation code into host file and put it serial…says it is invalid…downloading photoshop has changed slightly since before, would this have any effect on the code ? even with the interent off it still does say invalid…really frustrating.

  5. This method only valid for 7 days only, after that it will prompt out a windows ask for new serial number or either u choose 30 days trials.. lastly is all the serial number that shown in keygen/any free serial number we can get from website no working anymore.. any solution to solve this situation???

  6. Anyone know how is it that after installing cs5 i have no adobe host files? No host files at all for that matter and I have set my system to show hidden files….???

  7. THis does not seem to work for me. I have managed to change the content of the file, adding these lines (presumably immediately after 127.0.0.1 localhost), also my file is named ‘hosts’ not ‘host’?

PS – CS5 still asks me to activate!, and renders the previous serial number I used as invalid.

  8. will this work with cs5 flash??

  9. ..but how about indesign??do you have any idea..on how to block the software from accessing the internet..tnxz..plssss help me..

  10. hey does this actually work? this jus stops the suite from accessing the adobe servers ryt? so we could use the suite with a key which gets deactivated when we turn on the internet

  11. hi
    thanks…
it really helped but i only needed to use the 127.0.0.1 activate.adobe.com, to disable updates and suspend the product, but thanks anyways!

  12. awsome!!!!!

    it works fine…

  13. Worked a charm. I no longer have auto updates

  14. Works but mini bridge doesn’t. Please help.

  15. it doesnt let me save it on notepad…keeps saying cant create file, make sure path and name are correct..help!!

    • open start menu, search for notepad. rick click, and Run as Administrator. then in notepad choose file, open. go to windows\system32\drivers\etc and choose hosts file. if you don’t see when you try to open it, it make sure “all files” is selected instead of “text documents”. (Notepad defaults to look for text documents first.) type in info, and click save.

  16. Hi admin….thank you very much for your cute yet power tip. Your posts are much appreciated. Thanks a lot :) :) :)

  17. Machine-wide disablement

To disable access to updates for all users on a given machine, administrators can create an admin preference file. (This file disables access to updates both from the Help > Updates menu, as well as automatic update checks.) Create a plain-text file named AdobeUpdaterAdminPrefs.dat with the following contents:

    1

Put the file in the following location:
    Mac OS /Library/Application Support/Adobe/AAMUpdaterInventory/1.0/AdobeUpdaterAdminPrefs.dat
    Windows XP and Higher C:\Program files\common files\adobe\AAMUpdaterInventory\1.0\AdobeUpdaterAdminPrefs.dat
    Windows XP and higher (64-bit) C:\Program files(x86)\common files\adobe\AAMUpdaterInventory\1.0\AdobeUpdaterAdminPrefs.dat

  18. thank you so much, really works!!!!

  19. Also thought that this is worth mentioning:

It should be said that Adobe CS4 and 5 seems to try and connect directly after install on first run when it asks for Serial. So it’s been my experience that you need to disable internet connection even before you start installation and then do this procedure directly following install before you re connect. (Sorry for the run on sentence).

Oh and a fresh install is only possible if you go through the registry and delete all entries having to do with CS(whatever version you’re using).

    • How do you open registery?

    • As I am not computer savy, how can I make sure I am only deleting CS5 register entries and not other adobe software entries ?

      • because its not an .exe file to change the registry…you are not even going to regedit….

        • Before you indicated to go to regedit…now you are saying not going…As I said I am not computer savy so you are losing me in this answer…sorry.

Erik indicated that a fresh install is only possible if you go through the registry and delete all entries having to do with CS. I need to better understand this process and how I can identify the proper entries to delete.

          • Hi JC. That was to delete the old entries. Well we are not cracking anything here in photoshop. And you dont have to be a computer savy to do this. if your trial expired, there is no use of trying the steps in the post. dont follow the steps in the comment bro. That was to delete the old entries.

If you are in the trial period (not expired),just follow the 4 steps in the post

        • Thanks Billa,

I had understood if the trial was over, I needed to clean the registry, do your 4 steps and then re-install the trial version.

So since the trial period is finished, there is nothing that can be done.

I can still open CS5 if I unhook internet before opening it.

  20. Can this work if I’ve already installed cs5 and the 30 days has run out?

If not, how can I completely remove cs5 and do a fresh install and the mod?

  21. I tried it but somehow wont let me save?? what’s going on??

    • hey. Open it with notepad and add the urls. use ctrl+s to save it.

Turn off ur internet while doing this

      • Hey. Well, I tried to save it and I’m an administrator on my computer, but it says that I don’t have the permission to save it there, but to contact an administrator and until then, save it in My Documents. Any suggestions?

        • check your mail… replace it with existing host file

          • Hi, I have the same problem as Miriam’s (that I don’t have the permission to save it there, but to contact an administrator and until then, save it in My Documents) In fact, I’ve downloaded the trial version and have another 15 days left. Any idea? Thanks!

          • You need to modify the security descriptor for the file to ‘take ownership’
            and give yourself full access.

            Right-click the hosts file > Properties > Security > …..

          • Hey, thanks for the guidance, I managed to save the file where I wanted to, without using the file you sent me. I just went to properties and changed the access settings, and I now have full access!! :D

      • I have the same problem as they do. How do I change the access settings of the host file so that i can save the lines?

  22. Hey, I cant find the folder where the existing “host” file is located so I can replace it, im not that computer savy, have windows 7 home premium 64 bit. Have also modifies system registry to nulify internet acces from adobe live and such acording to adobes instructions in their webpage, nothing works.

  23. Installed while disconnected. Seems to work perfectly!

  24. Its not working. again it will ask key

  25. Thanks for posting this it was very useful.

  26. Avast detected it as malware. Not taking the chance.

  27. What about Mac? Do you have any idea about that? Can’t access my Deactivate button since it’s greyed out..
